Preporsition of place
En realidad no existe una razón de uso de una preposición concreta para hablar de un tiempo o lugar determinado, y lo que en tu lengua materna parece perfectamente lógico puede sonar raro cuando se traduce literalmente a otra lengua.
Aquí veremos: cómo y cuándo utilizar correctamente las preposiciones in, at y on en lo que respecta a lugares.
¿Cuándo utilizar at, in, on y cuáles son las reglas?
Te aconsejamos pararte a pensar en cómo de general o específico es el tiempo o el lugar al que se refiere la frase.
Si estás haciendo planes con otra persona, puede que tengas una conversación parecida a esta:
“Shall we go for a drink in the next few days?”
“Yeah, good idea - why don’t we meet on Friday?”
“Ok, fine - let’s meet at 8 p.m. on Friday.”
Fíjate en que al principio estos dos amigos están decidiendo simplemente que van a quedar en algún momento de los próximos días, y entonces utilizan “in”. Cuando fijan el día (tiempo más específico), la preposición es “on”. Y cuando concretan más (hablando de la hora), emplean “at”.
Vamos a una explicación más concreta:
At
At a point
Usamos at para referirnos a un punto cerca de algo.
Can you see that car at the traffic light? (=The car is at a point near the traffic light)
Who is that man at the door? (=The man is at a point near the door)
At the top of/at the bottom of/at the end of
Usamos at en las expersiones at the top of, at the bottom of y at the end of.
She is at the top of the stairs.

The new café is at the end of the street.
Group activities
Usamos at para referirnos a un grupo de actividades como parties, concerts, and other events.
We were at the cinema.
I didn’t see you at Jackie’s party.
We met at a concert.
At + school/university/college
Normalmente usamos at con school, university y college.
He is at school every morning until 12.
I’m studying at Oxford University.
Be at home/work
Decimos be at home/at work (sin the)
She’s at home.
She’s at the home.
I’ll be at work all morning.
I’ll be at the work all morning.
At the shop
Usamos at para referirnos a shops, restaurants, cafés, etc.
I’m at the bakery.
If you are at the chemist’s, can you buy some aspirin?
In
In a 3D space
Usamos in para referirnos a una posición dentro de un espacion 3D.
The book is in the bag.
She is waiting in the classroom.
In dentro de espacios con límites
Usamos también in para áreas que tienen límites o fronteras, como continents, countries, cities, regions, etc.
We are in France.
I love the houses in the Alps.
In a car
Usamos in para cars y vans.
They are in the car.
In the water
Usamos también in cuando algo está en el agua: in the sea, in the river, in the swimming pool, etc.
The kids have fun in the swimming pool.
In a picture, in a book
Usamos in para cosas que están impresas en books, pictures, documents, etc.
Who’s that woman in the picture?
Does it say anything about the concert in the newspaper?
On
On a surface
Usamos on para referirnos a una posición sobre la superficie.
The book is on the table.
On the first/second/etc. floor
Usamos on para referirnos a pisos en un edificio.
The office is on the third floor.
On the right/left
Usamos on en las expresiones on the right y on the left.
The office is on the third floor on the left.
On the bus/train/plane
Usamos on cuando estamos usando transportes públicos: on the bus, on a train, on a plane, etc.
She’s on the bus right now.
On TV/the radio/the Internet/a website
Usamos on cuando leemos, vemos o aprendemos algo en los medios de comunicación.
I saw it on TV last night.
I learned it on the internet.
